Lemon Buttermilk Cupcakes


The 4th of July was such a fun day! We ate a ton of good food, had yummy cocktails and hosted friends in honor of 2 of my friend's Tremana and Chrissy's birthdays! It was truly a perfect holiday. Though I'm not much of a firework girl, our house sits in the perfect location to view the fireworks going off all around LA, which was the icing on the cake for our day!

Speaking of icing! In honor of my girls, it was only right that I whipped up some fresh cupcakes with a yummy buttercream frosting that were a big hit. I found the perfect recipe on Pinterest via YourCupofCake.com. I topped them with strawberries and blueberries to pull the red, white and blue theme together. Literally, before I could even ice them, some were gone and as soon as I decorated the rest, they went in 1 minute! I didn't even get one! haha.


These have fresh lemon zest in them and are topped with a light and fluffy frosting that makes for the perfect summer treat! Decorate them with any type fruit (or don't) and I'm sure they will be a huge hit at your next party or event :) Recipe below:




  • 1 box of white cake mix

  • the zest of 2 large lemons

  • 3 eggs

  • 1/3 cup oil

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Whipped Cream:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold from the fridge

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream

  • sprinkles and fruit for decorating


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line pans with cupcake liners.

  2. In another bowl, combine lemon zest, eggs, oil, plain yogurt and buttermilk until well combined.

  3. Stir in cake mix.

  4. Fill cupcake liners 3/4 way full.

  5. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick or knife comes out clean and set aside to cool.

  6. Whipped Cream: Using a whisk stand or hand mixer, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add powdered sugar and vanilla and beat again. Slowly pour in whipping cream and increase speed. Beat until stiff peaks form. You want mixture to be cold when you top cupcakes, so put in fridge until cold if it is not cold when you finish. )

  7. Pipe or spread onto cooled cupcakes and top with sprinkles and fruit of your choice!
