5 Natural Medicine Alternatives

People are always so amazed to hear that instead of popping a pill for most of my ailments or conditions, I self diagnose and self treat. Even for cramps! I know, it sounds crazy (and unbelievable) but it's so important to me to maintain my health and if I can't read what's in the medicine or bottle, it's probably not going into or onto my body.

There is a reason the pharmaceutical industry is BOOMING! Ever listened to those prescription drug commercials? "Red pill or blue pill? Take this pill to treat dry skin but taking this pill may cause blood clots, migraines, high blood pressure and also may cause sudden death".

Wait... WHAT?! There's also a reason that text is at the very end of the commercial in fine print and said really really really fast so that you miss it. Then your doctor prescribes that pill that gives you migraines only to prescribe another that will treat the migraines. Next thing you know you're on like 5 different pills and feeling like sh*t and the original problem hasn't even gotten better. Plus, you have no idea what's in any of them.

There are several ways we can self-treat everyday ailments and conditions that we would ordinarily go to our doctor for. Read below to find out some of the ones I've started including in my life and how you can do the same!

1. Menstruation cramps: toss the tylenol for peppermint oil

I cramp like craaaaazy. Like it gets so bad I literally just curl up in a ball on a cold floor for the day. I used to pop a couple of extra strength tylenol and call it a day. When looking for a more natural alternative, I discovered peppermint oil and it's been my ride or die ever since! I use it for cramps, body aches, and more. Simply apply it to the area in pain and apply a hot compress. Relax and let it do its magic! It'll provide a temporary soothing relief that's so much better than any pill!

2. Scar removal: trade the over-the-counter cream for tea tree oil

Popping pimples, everyone does it. I have had psoriasis for so many years of my life and because of that my skin would get these terrible never-ending blotches. There are so many products on the market that claim to remove your scars... black soap, ambi whitening cream... eeekk! ALL SO BAD. Our facial skin is so super important. Try diluting 2 drops of tea tree oil with rose water, allow it to dry, then apply another coat. Wash and apply moisturizer. Use this remedy daily and watch your scars fade away!

3. Sleeping aid: ditch the sleeping pills for lavender oil

Recently I had been having trouble getting to sleep for some weird reason. Sleep is usually so easy for me but I'm a really light sleeper, any noise wakes me, so that makes it even worse! Lavender oil is has a property that not only calms the mind and body but also helps with sleeping. Rub a couple of drops together in your palms, smooth onto your pillow to help you drift into sleep.

4. Anxiety and depression: put aside the pills for an amazing essential oil blend

While I personally do not suffer from anxiety or depression, I have quite a few friends who do. I've seen how difficult it can be for those who suffer and often have no where to turn. Essentials oils are all so different and blends can offer results for uplifting spirits, calming, stress relief, relaxation and more. Use some of the following combinations by diffusing them around the home, inhaling in your palms, massaging them into your neck, behind the ears, feet, wrists, chest or dropping in a warm bath.

Combinations:

  • mood lifting: frankincense, blue tansy, howood, spruce

  • calming during a panic attack: eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, tea tree

  • support through depression + anxiety: elemi, tangerine, lemon myrtle, lavandin, ylang ylang, melissa, sandalwood, osmanthus

  • well being + positive thoughts: lavender, roman chamomile, sweet marjoram, sandalwood, ylang ylang, vanilla

5. Cold + flu: pour out the Nyquil for a homemade flu shot

I do not play getting sick! Just as much as the next person, if I even feel an inkling of sickness coming on, I am taking the shots... but not the flu shot! I've actually never had a flu shot in my life and have never gotten the flu! When I feel my body getting weak, I dose up on my own natural made flu shot. 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, diluted with water + 1 capful of apple cider vinegar and grated garlic. Throw it back and stay well hydrated and well rested to kick a cold before it even begins!
